Uproxx ranks Best Wing Chains in USA

One of my online distractions is the info site UPROXX. I read it for movie and tv, but it also has news news, and food stuff. Checking it out today, I see they decided to rank chicken wing chains across the US of A.

This is their ranking briefly - with some of my commentary, but you can read the whole article down below, or go to the link HERE.

10.  Dominos
9.    Cheesecake Factory
8.    Pizza Hut
7.    P.F Chang's
6.    Buffalo Wild Wings
5.    Wing Zone
4.    Anchor Bar
3.    Hooters
2.    Wingstop
1.    Bon Chon

I have never had the privilege of having wings at the Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang's, Wing Zone, Wingstop or Bon Chon. Shocking I know, but most of these places do not have locations in Canada, and I haven't had the opportunity to go to them when I have been in the US.

That leaves Dominos, Pizza Hut, BWW, Anchor Bar, and Hooters.

DOMINOS
I have never been crazy about Dominos chicken wings in Canada. They are usually meaty but they are a soggy mess, baked and not crispy at all. The sauce is also weirdly sweet. The author of the article seems to suggest that theirs are fried . . . so they would probably be on the bottom part of my list too.

PIZZA HUT
Pizza Hut revamped their wings several years ago, creating Wing Street, where they started taking wings seriously. I think they did a great job of improving take-out wings. In-fact, I did a wing-by-wing comparison to Dominos a few years ago and found their wings were crispy, sauced well and tasty.

BUFFALO WILD WINGS
This is a chain that I just don`t get. I`ve been to it 3 times in the US and every time have been served disappointing wings. Large, yes, but mushy soft skinned wings with rubbery/tough chicken. This was at different locations. I would put these low on my list.

ANCHOR BAR
This is the Mecca of chicken wings. I've been to the original on pilgrimage, but I've also been to the franchise chains in Hamilton On and last January in Toronto near the airport. These are solid Buffalo wings, obviously.

HOOTERS
I've had great wings at Hooters and terrible terrible wings at Hooters. Actually I've never formally reviewed them on the blog (I did a few years ago go and take photos, but it was part of my phase where the reviews never made it to print). I have only been to the Hooters in downtown Toronto and generally it was for their AYCE wings. The worst wings I had there we were served BAD chicken, like it smelled foul and off and was grey mushy inside. Most times the wings came crispy/crunchy with a tasty sauce. But it's hard to get past that bad experience.

What about you - have you been to these places? What do you think of UPROXX's ranking?

Power Ranking The Best Chicken Wing Chains In The Country

Chicken wings are kinda the best. They’re small delivery systems of savory, sweet, and spicy flavor. Throw some in a deep frier and then toss them in a great sauce … Brilliance. But deep frying food at home is a pain in the ass. Wings are something we tend to go out for. Hence almost every fast casual has an assortment on their menus and even pizza delivery has gotten in the game.
So where can we get the absolute best wings in America? To complete this masterful task we have to take a few things into consideration. First, let’s set aside the classic fried chicken joints — we can’t have Popeye’s winning every chicken-related competition. Let’s just focus on the fast food and fast casual wing-heavy places that are mostly nationwide, allowing us all a chance to check these picks out.
Sure, places like Hattie B’s in Nashville would probably win hands down, but they only have Nashville locations and one in Alabama. So Nashville hot chicken has to sit this one out. Though, if we ever rank the straight up best chicken in the country, regardless of size, be assured, they’ll be in the running.
Okay, let’s cut to the chase and rank some wings.

10. Domino’s

When it comes to wings Domino’s > Papa John’s. Where Papa John’s wings get a bit sloppy, Domino’s tend to be crisply fried and simply dressed in hot sauce. There’s not a whole lot going on otherwise. These are the sorta wings you order as an afterthought like, “Sure, fill up a pizza box of wings for me too, YOLO.”

9. Cheesecake Factory

If we’re talking fast casual, The Cheesecake Factory is the mountaintop. Sorry TGI Fridays and Applebees. So long Ruby Tuesday. The Factory (that’s what the restaurant’s acolytes call it, right?) buffalo wings are perfectly suitable as an appetizer. They’re crispy and saucy like any good buffalo wing. And that’s about it. They aren’t mind-blowing or transcendent. They’re just good — if you can find them on The Factory’s (we’re sticking with this one) insanely deep menu.

8. Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut is one of those pizza chains where the wings aren’t an afterthought. The main reason being that they’re more creative with the saucing options. Their seven flavors are good wing options in general. Spicy Garlic, Hawaiian Teriyaki, and Cajun Style are among the best ways to get down on some Pizza Hut wings.

7. P.F. Chang’s

Back in the fast casual world, P.F. Chang’s dominates the wings selection. Dragon Wings are tasty AF. These are some of the better-dressed wings on this list with a great spice matrix of cayenne, soy sauce, orange, ginger, garlic, sesame, and sweet brown sugar. Add in a pretty decent bar to the mix and you’ve got a great place to eat some delicious wings during happy hour.

6. Buffalo Wild Wings

If you’re going out for wings, BWW seems like the second option you’d settle for when you find your favorite wing joint is closed. Don’t get us wrong, the wings are perfectly fine here — it’s what they do best after all. The Thai Curry wings are legit tasty. But there’s a bro-culture you have to deal with at the bars — which, meh. And the wings are just … pretty okay.

5. Wing Zone

This is where wings start getting more serious. Wing Zone’s locations mostly fall east of the Rockies where they fry up some serious wings that’ll satisfy your appetite for small pieces of deep fried chicken. Their Lemon Zinger and Garlic Parm flavors shine brightest alongside a pile of potato wedges. Their Nuclear Habanero Buffalo Wings pack enough kick to put a full grown buffalo down in the dirt.
You’ll need a lot of napkins for all that sweat that’ll be rolling off your brow, bro.

4. Anchor Bar

This is where it all started. Buffalo Wings were invented at this Buffalo, NY bar back in 1964. The Buffalo Wings from Anchor Bar started it all so they get some respect on this list, even though you can only get them in New York, Virginia, Texas, and California as of now. The wings are deep fried with a great sauce that has echoed through the ages. If you’re near an Anchor Bar, it’s absolutely worth dipping in for an order of the world’s most famous chicken wings.

3. Hooters

Hooters are everywhere. And, you know what, their wings are actually good. They hit the mark with perfectly crispy wings, dressed in a tasty sauce that doesn’t make the wings lose their crunch. Their Signature wings and Daytona Beach wings stand out as great additions to the wing pantheon. Plus, they serve bacon-wrapped wings for maximum #YOLO. Bacon plus wings equal very, very good.

2. Wingstop

Wingstop is everywhere as well. Their wings are near perfection. The crispily fried aspects of Wingstop’s wings is tasty on its own but it’s their sauces where things really start to shine. Habanero Mango is sweet and spicy in all the right ways. Cajun, Louisiana Rub, Hickory Smoked BBQ, and Teriyaki all hit the mark with deeply rooted flavors that wonderfully accent the crispy wing underneath. These are great wings.

1. Bonchon

Bonchon started out as a hometown fried chicken wing joint in Busan, South Korea. The wings were so delicious, Bonchon quickly spread across American, Asia, and the world. The wings are perfectly fried to crisp perfection and then dressed simply with heavy doses of umami and spice, alongside whispers of sweetness tying the whole wing together. Bonchon is the type of place that you may have never thought of going to. But once you eat there, it’ll be the only place you’ll ever want to go back to for all your wing needs.

Buffalo Latte from Tim Horton's

Tim Horton's has something new:

That's right, in 2 locations in Buffalo NY, they are serving a Buffalo Latte drink. Move over pumpkin spice!

That being said, I can't find any concrete information on this. I see it being reported on a bunch of news and food sites, but I can't find any original details.

I searched. Everyone keeps showing the same photo, but I can't find where it came from. There is no info on the Tim Horton's website. No news site has any info link. HOW DID PEOPLE FIND OUT ABOUT THIS!?!?! WHAT IS THE SOURCE!!!!

That being said I'm excited (not surprised) about any chicken wing culture addition, but would I try it? Well I don't drink coffee or latte's, so it's hard to say. Would you? Have you?

Le PUB CHELSEA ~ Chelsea QC

My buddy Jason was visiting Ottawa and we made a day of exploration and history in Gatineau Park in Quebec. We were at the grave of Prime Minister Lester B Pearson, did some very light hiking in the woods, visited Prime Minister Mackenzie King's estate, took in some pioneer cemeteries . . . you know, a pretty usual sight seeing trip.

After lots of trekking around, we made our way to Chelsea, a small town just north of Ottawa that is probably most famous for its Nordik Spa. We passed by Le Pub Chelsea, which was pretty busy for a weekday afternoon. We needed a bite to eat and it was a beautiful day out, so we stopped in and grabbed a seat on the patio.

Jason got a traditional poutine; fries, cheese curds, gravy. And it tasted exactly how you want a poutine experience to be: salty, crispy, squeeky.

For my snack, I went with the chicken wings, obviously.

I had read reviews that had said the Chelsea had good wings. I read over the menu and was impressed with the sauces. One thing did catch my eye and gave me a moment to pause. The menu said that 6 wings were $12.45. My first thought was that was a crazy price for 6 wings and I don't feel right paying that much for 6 wings. But I have been to several wing places and when they say 6 at say that price, they mean whole wings (drummette, wingette and tip). Well I was wrong.

It was just the individual pieces. I couldn't believe it. I mean the wings looked really good, but I can't fathom what justified that price point. The wings were large, and medium in meatiness. They were not fried, and I believe they were baked. This meant that the meat was tender, but the skin was soft and not crispy.

HOT

I went with Hot as the base flavour to try. The sauce was a peppery, savory hot sauce. I really liked the flavour because it wasn't just the usual bottled hot sauce. There was a bit of a bite, but a depth of flavour. I enjoyed every bite.

SUICIDE

On the side I got their suicide. It was a bit hotter than the hot, but not by much. But it was also sweeter, like honey, than the hot. I liked it but wouldn't describe it as suicide. It also marred the wing flavour by being served cold (as in fridge cold not room temperature), and that took away from the wing experience.

FINAL SCORE

I really enjoyed the flavour of the hot wings. They were almost decadent, and made me envious of each bite after they were gone. Texture wise I think deep frying would give that crispy texture that the skin needs. Suicide was ok but was cold. I'd love to try their Chelsea Guinness. But without a wing night, these wings are egregiously expensive. They were good, but not $2 a wing good. Otherwise, the service was friendly, the place has a cool vibe, and I'd go back to Le Pub Chelsea in the future.

I want to give a higher score because the flavour was good, but wing science is wing science.

Rest Stop Wings from Swiss Chalet/OnRoute Mallorytown

After driving for hours, any rest stop wings will do! We had been on the 401 after doing a multi-day multi-family tour and we had to stop to eat something. I saw all the banners at the ONroute rest stop at Swiss Chalet and my mind was made up (don't tell me advertising doesn't work!).

These Swiss Chalet Hot Wings were tiny & overpriced, but they were crispy & tasty. They stayed crispy because all the sauce was on the bottom. The sauce had a slight heat to them, but also a sweetness to them.

Would I get them again? Maybe. I'm a sucker for wings, but they were so tiny and not a good price ...

#fryday wings @ Moe's Famous

 Friday means #fryday wings!

I was running errands and it was lunch, so I decided I'd like some wings. As I was driving, I see this pizza joint "Moe's Famous Pizza & Wings" and I decide, meh, let's try it. I was expecting the same small wings with bottled sauce that most Ottawa pizza places tend to have. But boy was I surprised.

I got 10 wings which is usually around a pound, but when I picked up the box it felt like a brick. No way this was just 1lb. The wings were large, meaty & crispy! The meat was a bit tough, and I suspect it had something to do with them being frozen. They were very saucy and it was a great peppery suicide sauce; it wasn`t just hot sauce from a bottle but a mix they made up on the spot. I like that.

Anyways, glad I found this gem!

#tbt Village Idiot & Zombie Walk

#throwbackthursday to 2013, a simpler time.

I was living in Toronto & my buddy Rick came from London for us to go to the Annual Zombie Walk.

It was a long walk down at Trinity Bellwoods Park through Chinatown and back, so we were going to have to fuel up. My apartment was near The Village Idiot, so we checked it out.

Rick went with a burger, but I went with wings (obviously). The wings were just ok, but I was able to get them with onion rings, and unlike most places, it came with a side of tartar sauce (usually blue cheese or ranch).

After we did up our makeup and headed to join the zombie horde. It was amazing. I couldn't get over all the people both walking and watching. I was hooked. I did the zombie walk until it was cancelled. I now live in Ottawa, and while I can't go to the Ottawa Zombie walk, I am going to be a zombie in the "Incident at the Bunker: A Zombie Adventure" at the Diefenbunker - yes a zombie haunted house inside a cold war bunker! Get your tickets today.

Fixing my Score & Tech/Software Problems

My plan today was to institute a new SCORE for my chicken wing reviews - modernize the look and tweak the values/info slightly. Writing my reviews (the backbone of the blog) takes a long time - editing my photos, writing up my story. and one of the big time suckers is writing up the SCORE. I've been working on a solution to make it quick, but in the meantime I was going to use a variant on my old score.

But I can't do that now. I'm having tech/software issues and its really frustrating.

So until I get that figured out, here is my #wingwednesday post. While the wings might look good, they were fried in old oil which made for some unfortunate wings.

500th Photo on Instagram

Here is my 500th photo on Instagram:

A shift happened in 2015 when I got my first cell phone. I thought it was going to really revamp this blog; taking photos of wings in restaurants is so much easier and discreet than whipping out my camera. I thought I'd be able to do reviews right on the spot . . . this has not been the case. BUT it did expand my social media capabilities. I've tried Snapchat (not a fan, I find it buggy and just don't like using it) but Instagram was a hit for me.

I love Instagram because its quick, easy and editable. I'm looking at amazing photography by others, and have been connected to a HUGE chicken wing community I didn't even knew existed. I rarely check Facebook or Twitter these days, but Instagram lets me share my wings with the world.

I've tried to craft some #hashtags and events:

  • Monday is #mememondays where I either regram or post my own designed meme about wings.
  • Wedensday is #wingwednesday  ... I mean almost everyday is wings but for sure on Wednesday.
  • Thursday is #throwbackthursdays or #tbt for old blog posts, photos, or meals about wings.
  • Sunday is #nonwingsunday which focuses on food other than wings.
  • Random days are #happinesshappenedhere showing off the bones of past wing meals.
Some of my specific #hashtags include:
  • #lordofthewings  = that's me! Some others use this, but I'm the REAL Lord of the Wings
  • #lotw  = lord of the wings
  • #lotwtestkitchen = when I test out a recipe or experiment with a tool, product etc.
  • #lotwmemes = wing memes that I created
  • #lotwwants2know = I want to hear from YOU about something
  • #lotwsatisfied = those were some very good wings
  • #lotwunsatisfied = those were some NOT very good wings
  • #wingporn = explicit chicken wings pics
  • #itsnotallaboutwings = sometimes I post non-wing food & events (but rarely)
  • #itsallaboutwings = ok I have a wing obsession
  • #3rddegreeaddict = 3rd Degree is a commercial hot sauce not easily available to the public that I love and find that a lot of restaurants as their suicide sauce

So if you aren't already, check out my Instagram @lotw_wingking  - guaranteed to cause drooling and a craving for wings!

2000th Tweet & 31 Day Challenge

Hey - I just had my 2000th Tweet today!

I know for some that is nothing, but that's a pretty big milestone for me. Another milestone for me is that today is my birthday - so to celebrate both, I had some chicken wings (of course).

Now that I'm older and more contemplative, I've been looking back over the last few years. This blog has suffered. It's been pretty neglected. For the most part, it's become a meme site. I haven't done an official wing review in forever. So I want to make a big change and force myself to get back at it. So I've decided to make a 31 day challenge for myself.

I have been taking photos and embracing wing culture for a very long time (I have a huge backlog of reviews, photos, recipes etc) but it's time to get back to where it all began and hopefully this will be the motivation I need. Instagram has been my jam mostly lately (@lotw_wingking) but the blog, the blog is where it all started and it needs some love. Over the month of October I am committing to getting one post a day. I want those reviews coming back. I'm going to still be doing #mememonday and #throwbackthursday. It might just be a photo of my dinner, but baby, Lord of the Wings is coming back.
