Big Boys Burgers - Whitby ON

This review is from March 2020

"Go Big or Go Home Hungry"

This is actually the last official food review I did before Covid-19 changed life here in Ontario. We had just brought back my father in law who had been traveling internationally when the Corono Virus was just starting to spill out across the world. It was good timing!

While he had been having some delicious meals, we were pretty sure he was getting tired of the same cuisine the whole time. We knew he was going to have missed eating beef, so getting some burgers seemed to be a great solution. We also decided to try out a new to us burger joint, Big Boy's Burgers. I had actually been there back in 2016 to try a wing review but it didn't work out. I wasn't doing wings this time though either so a proper wing review will have to wait.

I thought that this was an independent burger joint in Whitby ON, but it turns out it's a small chain. But it feels local. The place has kind of a race-car themed diner feel to the joint, with checkered flag patterns, flames painted on the walls, and tables made with diamond tread garage flooring. There is also some patio seating outside, but inside is booths and tables. It was very busy with both dine-in and take-out and this was on a weekday!

The staff were super friendly. The cashier (and possibly manager, possibly owner? she seemed in charge!) was very willing to explain the whole menu and make recommendations. They young guys making the burgers were also super friendly and chatting me up while they assembled burger after burger!

We looked at the menu board and the family sat down and I went up to order at the counter . Burgers are obviously the main show here, but you can also get wings, souvlaki, cheesesteaks, poutine and more - my kind of place! Prices were pretty reasonable too. And they serve Coke products.

The burgers were all made to order, and they have a large display case of toppings for you to personalize your burger the way you want, much like Harvey's. We all got combo's with fountain drinks and fries - I almost got onion rings because I love onion rings, but the fries just looked so good!

The cashier/manager woman was enthusiastic about the fries being just like chip truck fries, and they were. They are fresh-cut, skin on, a little chunky but not too thick either. I topped mine with salt and had vinegar and ketchup for dipping. And if I remember correctly, they had malt vinegar as well as regular vinegar.

LJ and her dad both got pretty simple burgers and I didn't want to hamper their eating with photos, so I didn't bother taking any shots of theirs.

We all got their 1/4 pound Original Burgers, but I added cheese and bacon to mine.

This is how I topped mine: Lettuce, pickle, hot peppers, cheese bacon, raw onion, tomato, mayo and hot sauce - just the way I like it! The bun was toasted but soft, the beef patty was meaty but also had that nice grilled flavour. Bacon was good and crispy and the cheese was melted just right. The veggies were nice and fresh too.

Overall I really enjoyed both the food and the service. This was a good burger, good fries, good times. I think this was actually the last restaurant I've stepped into since March, which seems crazy. But as my last for a long while, I don't regret it; Can't wait to one day go back!

Law & Orders - Innisville (Perth) On

#lotwwintercatchup This Review is from Feb 2020

Back in February LJ and I took a weekend trip to Perth Ontario. I've already talked about some pizza & wings we got there, and even a great burger. But on the way home for lunch, we got ANOTHER great burger.

I had read about a burger joint called Law & Orders. We love the show Law & Order (especially SVU), but I don't think this has any connection. Actually that's not true, they have a food truck that is Law & Orders SBU (Special Burger Unit). Very cute. But the owner's name is Jamie Law, but I'm sure he must be a fan.

From doing a simple search online I learned about the existence of the restaurant and that it was well reviewed. What I didn't realize was that the location in town was inside the local college, and the college was closed. The other location is outside Perth in Innisville and we had actually driven past it on the way to Perth but I didn't even notice it (looking back, I don't know how I didn't see it!). So that's the one that we ended up going to on our way home.

The buisness itself has a short but interesting history. Law opened up in a little building on the site back in 2014. In 2017, an explosion blew that building to smithereens and burned what was left. While they were devastated, they rebuilt on the land a bigger, better restaurant.

The outside is bright red/orange (again, how I missed it on the way in I don't understand). They have a big deck off to the side during warmer month for sitting. Inside is pretty open with the left side all dining tables and a door/wall that opens up in the summer. On the right is more tables and chairs but also counter seating. Ordering is done at a window up the middle, and you can sit on an old but nicely kept car seat as a bench.

The crowd was very mixed; families, seniors, snowmobilers. It was packed and we were lucky enough to get a table. We checked out the giant menu board which is divided into the general menu and the pizza menu.

One of the things Law & Orders is famous for is it's Rhippo Challenge. It's 2 Rhippo Burgers (2 1/2 pound beef patties, with a fried egg, bacon, and cheese) and 1lb of poutine. If you can eat it all in 20 minutes it's free, you get a t-shirt and photo on the wall; if not, it's $24.99 and some personal shame. While this sounds awesome, I didn't do it. I was hungry, but not 2lbs of beef hungry.

We went to the counter and Katie was taking orders. While the place was packed, we got there at just the right time that we were the only ones in line so we could ask questions and chat with Katie about the place a bit. Both of us got burgers, with LJ going for the Mac Bites and me the onion rings on the sides. We went back to our table and didn't wait long for our order.

L&O's has fresh cut fries, and I love fresh cut fries, but I also love a deep fried battered onion ring. I got a medium order of Onion Rings ($6) because that's the smallest it comes, but it's a generous portion of rings. These were good; they came out hot and crispy, but they could have stayed in the deep fryer just a bit longer in my opinion.

LJ got the 5 piece Mac & Cheese Bites ($5 for 5 pieces or $10 for 12). Katie said that these were really good and she loves getting them. It's basically Kraft Dinner that's breaded and very good. They too came out nice and hot, with that crispy outside but slightly goey inside. I personally think they need a creamy dip like ranch but they are still good plain.

LJ sometimes just likes something simple, so she just got a regular Hamburger ($5.50). It's nothing too exciting to look at but that's a classic 1/4 pounder there. She liked it, and she doesn't always like thicker, homemade burgers.

In contrast, I like a little more on my burgers, but my go-to is almost always a bacon cheeseburger. I have to be honest, I was tempted for their Innisville Inferno burger (1/4 lb patty with sriracha, cayenne pepper, hot sauce, jalapenos and cheese) or the Overkill 1/2 lb patty, bacon, cheese curds, fries, gravy and deep fried pickle), I mean those sound awesome. A lot of the burgers come with a fried egg on them, but I'm not crazy about fried eggs on burgers. What caught my eye was The Ringer: 1/2 lb patty, cheese, bacon, and onion rings for $10.

My burger was stacked tall and ready to make a mess. The burger comes with the patty, the bacon, cheese and onion rings. For my toppings I went with lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, and mayo. I found the construction interesting as they put the onion rings on the bottom under the patty instead of the top as I've seen most places put it - it worked though! LJ was surprised that I got this burger and ordered onion rings, worried it was onion ring overkill, but it just seemed right.

This was a very very tasty burger. Fresh sesame seed bun, and fresh veggies on top. The beef itself was meaty, had a nice crust but good soft juicy inside. The onion rings were crunchy and there was enough sauces to not drown the burger but keep everything from being dry. The bacon was crispy but still chewy in a good way, and the cheese was nice and melted. This was just everything I was looking for in a burger that day and it did not disappoint.

All around the food was really good. I certainly would go back and get the same order again. Those other burgers sound interesting and if I lived nearby I would for sure try if I ate here more. The Rhippo Challenge sounds fun, but as I get older I just can't eat as much as I used to. But the fries, the poutine, the deep fried pickles, even the pizza all sounds good. I'm not sure when I'll be back, but I look forward to it.

Final Verdict: Guilty as Charged (being charged with being awesome)

MEATHEADS GRILL - Orleans ON

Last review of 2019!!! #lotwwintercatchup

I am always on the hunt for not only new wing joints, but new restaurants with food that I love. You know, pizza, burgers, bbq. I also love independent joints. So I'm going through my Instagram and in the Explore section, I see Caleel Hall (@caleelh on Instagram) posted a photo of a giant burger:

That burger looks massive! That led me on a little investigation. Turns out he was in Orleans (a suburb of Ottawa, not to be confused with NEW Orleans in the US), and he was having this amazing burger at a new place called Meatheads Grill. That led me to a little rabbit hole of research on this new place. Turns out they just had their grand opening on November 30th, and we were now into December! As I checked out their Instagram (@meatheadsorleans) and I saw that there was wings on the menu. And as fate had it, I was headed to Orleans the next day!

Now the next part of my review is mixed and I'm going to jump the story. In the month of December, I went twice. The first time for wings, the second to try the burger. But the structure of how I write my reviews doesn't fit for chronology. Just wanted to give you that heads up.

Meatheads is inside a Quickie convenience store, which seems crazy. There are signs up for Meatheads, but if you don't know this area (and I didn't) it may be hard to see. I had done some research, but didn't know where to go exactly until I saw the red Quickie mart sign.

Inside Quickie, in the back left corner is Meatheads. It looks kinda like a BBQ joint grew into the convenience store. I almost thought it could have been like a Subway or something originally based on the size. Actually I thought this was their first time/food venture, but after talking to one of the guys running the place, the owner/chef Jessie James was doing like a french fry thing before. I later found out they were doing that out of this same location.

Both times I went, the Meatheads crew have been busy, on the go, scrambling to make everything work. Deliveries are coming in, calls are coming in, customers are coming in. Each time I came in I'm told up front that something isn't available for the day (they are still working out inventory kinks). Eggs seemed to be out both times. The staff are friendly, as was owner Jessy who I would have love to chat with, but he was constantly on the go.

Everyone was ordering the pulled pork sandwiches. That seems to be what to get here. The other guy that was doing the front of house (didn't catch his name, might have been Neil?), gave me some of the lowdown of what was going on. He told me he wasn't the one cooking, he was just the taste tester (as he was eating part of a sandwich that Jessy brought him). He said they'd been up and running a couple of weeks; he asked if I was here because of the Orleans Ontario Foodie group, who did a lot of word-of-mouth promotion for their big opening.  He said the pulled pork was popular, as was the burgers, and teased me about getting the wings. The next time I went back for the burger.

I ordered the Meathead Delux ($14), which comes with no sides, but is a big, hefty burger. It came in a biodegradable small clam-shell, and barely fit in, and it felt heavy like a brick. I got the burger to go and when I was sitting there in my car, I thought, "how am I going to eat this thing without making a mess everywhere!"

And I did make a mess. It's a very messy burger.

The Meathead Delux is:

"Lettuce, Tomato, Crispy Onion Ring, Fried Onions, Sauteed Mushroom, Bacon, Cheese, House BBQ, Mayo"
I got mine without mushrooms because, well mushrooms are gross. This thing was teetering left and right and was impossible to hold single-handedly, which made photos hard to do. It's saucy, full of ingredients, and was hot to boot.

Everything on that burger tasted fresh and delicious. First, you have a nice soft, toasted fresh bun. Then the burger is fresh ground beef from a local butcher and ground in house; nice beefy flavour which went well with the cheese. The bacon is meaty and crispy and salty. I love the crispy onion ring in there. Then you have the fried onions adding their own smokey/caramelized attitude to the burger party. Finally, I love mayo and BBQ sauce on a burger, and this thing was oozing sauce. It was just a really good burger offering everything I pretty much want on a burger. But make sure you have napkins.

On the first visit however, I was here for the wings. When I ordered, Neil(?) asked Jessy & the cook in the back if they were good for wings. Jessy said they had wings "but we have to rinse them off and throw them in the fryer. They just thawed out overnight so they will take a few extra minutes" - I appreciate them being upfront about everything so I can make the best choice. I chose to wait because wings are worth waiting.

When Neil(?) asked about what sauce I wanted I asked if their Hot was just like Frank's. He said it was like a "regular, bbq wings hot,"  Jessy jumped in and said "it comes in the big jugs, we don't make the hot sauce itself, just the bbq sauce and the burger sauces." So I clearly went with the House BBQ; "Ya you'll like that" Neil(?) said proudly.

I did have to wait a while for the wings, but that was ok (and they told me they would take some time). When they were ready the packaged them up and asked me if I wanted sour cream. I asked if they had blue cheese or ranch and Neil(?) balked at me, 'Ranch, bah, they don't serve salad, ranch is banned from here'. So I got sour cream and headed out to the car.

The wings too are served in a biodegradable clamshell, and I have to give them props for using this instead of styrofoam. The wings come by the pound, and there are approx 8 wings in that pound, pretty evenly split flats and drums.

They even came with a garnish of a lettuce leaf and some pickle slices. I found it odd, but it was nice, especially having the tart, bright pickles to contrast the fried, bbq sauced wing. Plus it looks pretty!

Size wise were were looking at a medium wing in length and size, but the wings were pretty meaty.

Unfortunately, the wings were not very crispy at all, and the meat was a bit tough, and my eating time was moments from getting them to walking to my car. They said they had just thawed, and maybe the wings didn't spend enough time in the fryer?  Or maybe it was the sauce ...

... because these wings were saucy! Really wet, with every inch covered in sauce, with lots left behind in the container. So the sauce may have weakened the structural integrity of the crispy skin, but I still suspect not enough deep frying.

The flavour of the sauce was tasty. Zippy even? Its sweet, it's got a little bit of smoke, but still a light sauce. It's right in the sweet spot of texture being not too thick and not too thin. Jessy had asked me from the back if it was ok that the sauce had "a kick to it", I said Sure, ya cuz I'm into that, and he clarified that "it's not killer or anything." Unfortunately I didn't find it had a kick or any bite, but it was tasty.

This would be excellent on pork or other bbq meats. I can see the sweetness pairing well with the pulled pork for example, better than I think it does with a chicken wing.

FINAL SCORE:

I liked Meatheads a lot. It's the kind of quirky little shack you would find on Diners, Drive-In's and Dives. People oriented crew with a passion for their product. The food isn't cheap, but it's priced fairly and is definitely not mass produced fare. The wings were tasty, but I wish they were a lot more crispy. Next time I go I'll pass on the wings, but when you have an awesome burger like the Meathead Delux, why would you get the wings? 8/14

#nonwingsunday = the "Gettin' Piggy With It" from @works_burger Westboro.

Beef patty, Canadian Bacon, smoked bacon, cheddar, smokey BBQ sauce & crispy onions with die-cut chips & a side of "Hotter Than Hell" sauce.

Pretty much my go to at The Works; this photo does not do it justice. So beefy, bacony, smokey, & with those crispy onion string ... Burger Heaven.

Dic Ann's (Marche Central) - Montreal QC

This may sound crazy, but every time I travel from Ontario to Quebec, it feels like going to another country. The road signs are different, the language is different, and there is a distinct cultural difference between the two. This includes food; not only does Quebec have it's own culinary eperience, but it's own fast food chains that don't exist outside the province. Dic Ann's is one of those.

LJ was in Montreal for business, but when she was done it was time to get some lunch. I was doing some research on where to eat, and I came across this Quebec-only chain called Dic Ann's. See, back in 1954 jazz accordionist Ann Russel and her American born husband Dominic 'Dick' Potenza who moved to Montreal and opened their vision of a hamburger joint that served their special hot sauce in a little shack. They moved into their original restaurant and now over 50 years later they have a chain of more than 10 locations. But they don't just serve normal burgers. More on that later.

If time and distance permitted I would have liked to go to their original location, but as life would have it, we couldn't, so we hit up their location at Marche Central. I've noticed several mall or commecial buildings that in Montreal make no sense to me. This location is in a big mall plaza, in a building shared by a Tim Horton's that is undergoing renovation. But both store fronts look like the back, but are the front as the other side just faces the entrance to the mall area. The construction aside, we weren't sure if this was the front of the restaurant or the back. It was the front, but what a terrible looking store.

Inside was a flurry of activity as customers were lined up, ordering, leaving, standing, sitting. Very busy place. Even though I had looked at the menu before, we needed to stand back and take in the menu. Everything was in French, and so we had to do some on the spot translating. I was not feeling confident in my Francais and I politely asked in my best French if they spoke English; the cashier (unhappily) did. I felt bad, but this was new food territory and I didn't want to make a mistake. Sorry!

The inside is painted in yellows and oranges and off-whites. There are black and white photos of Dic and Ann, the first restaurant and other franchise nostalgia. The seating is classic fast food tables with a mix of American and French pop music.

The menu is very limited to their burger and it's variants, hot dogs, and fries and fry variants. We decided to split a Poutine between the two of us, and LJ went with a cheeseburger, and I went with a double cheeseburger.

I was shocked at the poutine. I was shocked that such a thing could be called and served a poutine in Quebec. Shocked. Their poutine ($4.95) is thin cut fries, covered in shredded mozzarella and their 'hot sauce'. Shredded mozzarella. Not cheese curds, mozzarella. #poutinecrime. And no gravy, just their hot meat sauce. It's not that it tasted bad, it wasn't half bad. It just isn't like any poutine I know, (well maybe like some in Ontario). The fries were crispy, the sauce slightly spicy. Ketchup helped. It was a good size portion.

Now one thing that sets this burger chain apart from others is the construction on their burger. They start off with ground beef that is pre-pressed into the flattest possible patty you can imagine. That patty is 1.75 ounces - super tiny. When I proposed this place to LJ, it was based on this fact as she loves a thin burger. That thin burger is cooked on the flat top and pressed even flatter. See this photo from their website:

That is almost paper thin. They cook it for like 30 seconds a side then flip.

The bun is white burger bun that is squashed and toasted in it's own press. The bottom bun is then layered with their spicy sauce, then the burger and whatever burger variant you are getting.

There is an excess of their spicy sauce on the plate, so they supply popsicle sticks that you use as a lever to lift the burger out of the sauce.

LJ just got the classic cheeseburger that comes with 1 patty, spicy sauce, cheese, swiss cheese, onions, relish and mustard. She thought the burger was ok. It was really small even for her. For $2.80, it still seemed really small.

I knew a single wouldn't be enough, so I went with a double, which 3.5 oz of beef and is $4.45. It was still pretty small. I debated going with the double, or the Hi Boy, which just adds lettuce and tomato, or even the 3DST which is 3 patties, 2 mozzarella slices, with lettuce or tomato. Or the Hambourghini which has pepperoni on it. Again, I just went with a double.

I was really underwhelmed by this burger. It was tiny, and the flavour was simple. A little too simple. The beef at that size has no flavour. The texture is fine, but I don't understand the point. The bun was kinda crispy and had a unique texture. It was different and no complaints there. The spicy sauce is a secret homemade, tomato based, meat sauce. On the burger, the sauce is barely noticeable beyond the texture. When you try it on it's own, it's got a very slight kick of cayenne. But again on the burger you can't even taste it. The onion and mustard is the dominant flavours here, and even they aren't that strong.

Would I go back? Maybe? We just didn't get it. I don't know why folks seem to go crazy for this place. The burgers are small, with not much flavour. It was just too simple and not bold enough. With our 2 mini burgers, poutine and a 500ml Pepsi the bill came to $17.83. That just didn't seem worth it. Again, the food was ok, it was just tiny and plain. We left not full, nor satisfied. Oh well, sometimes you score when you explore another culture, sometimes you don't.
