MOE's FAMOUS PIZZA - Ottawa ON

Here at the blog I always seem to be playing catch up. I can't remember when I was posting a review within the same week I went out and actually had my meal. I have a lot of content on standby. I started to get things in order at the end of 2016 into 2017 and just to get by I was doing mini-reviews in the Year in Review and also over Instagram, but I've gone back to some of the places to do full on reviews, and Moe's Famous Pizza is one of those. But this review is still from last month.

I did a quick re-post from Instagram in October 2017, followed by a mini-review of Moe's in my Year in Review 2017,  and finally another #fryday Instagram from this past March. A quick recap, back in 2017 I was driving and saw the sign for Moe's Famous Pizza - never heard of them (how famous are they?) never tried them before, but I decided to stop in. I ordered 10 Suicide wings, and I was shocked 3 times: 1) the wings, served in a box, which was so heavy it felt like I was carrying a brick 2) the wings weren't just plain fried wings but were something special 3) the sauce wasn't your typical pizza joint take-out wings either. I was super impressed. Since then I've stopped in and chatted with who I assume is the owner/manager, who is always happy to talk about their wings and sauces and accommodates my requests. I think it's family run, and it seems to make a difference.

The place is nothing special building wise - it's a take-out pizza place with a vacant store next door and a loan institution on the other. It's clean inside, and while you can sit at a few stools at a counter, this place is about take-out/delivery.

I've tried two sauces in the past: Suicide and the BBQ (which is 40 Creek). The suicide was really good - nice heat and it was made with a bunch of spices and a detail to the sauce. The BBQ was good too. Now, I ask for a Suicide/BBQ mix because together they are really good.

On this particular occassion, I called ahead and ordered my usual BBQ/Suicide mix. I arrived and they were ready pretty soon. I took them to go and pulled over to have some lunch wings.

Wings are proudly displayed in the window, $10.99 for 10, $19.95 for 20, or $28.95 for 30. 10 wings here have to be somewhere between 1.5 lb and 2lbs worth of wings.

10 of these wings are more than enough for me for lunch - they are a large wing. They are also pretty meaty. This is not your average pizza joint wings. I also love that you can see spices and chilies in the sauce.

The wings I'm pretty sure come from frozen, and might have some sort of coating on them. The skin is crispy, which is great, but the meat is tough. Another downside is that the wings have an almost burnt taste to them - I'm guessing it's an old oil that's being used. It's not terrible, but I'm sure many people would not like it.

The wings are tossed in a generous amount of sauce - no wing is dry, and they are sloppy enough that there's extra sauce in the box. The BBQ is thick, sweet but not too sweet, while the suicide gives a nice bite. They use several spices and chili's added to the hot sauce to make for a unique and very tasty wing. These two sauces go really well together.

FINAL SCORE:

I was happy that I stumbled upon this place that fateful day. There are so many local pizza places that do wings ok - they deep fry plain wings and toss them in Frank's. Moe's Famous Pizza doesn't serve your average wings, and while Hot is just Frank's, their suicide is something special. While the wings can be a bit tough and can have a burnt flavour to them (they would have scored higher if it wasn't for those factors), they are big, crispy and have some very tasty sauces. I don't know what the pizza is like, but I keep coming back for the wings. 8/14

McDonald's Spicy Buffalo Sauce for McNuggets

I'm not ashamed to admit I go to McDonald's. Ok maybe a little, but sometimes its fast, it's cheap, and once and a while it can be really good. Plus with the McDonald's Mobile App, you get special deals. And they constantly have something new to try.

Going through the drive-thru (its 'thru' not through at McD's) these days there is a lot of information to take in:

  • McCafe drinks and bakery now takes up a huge chunk of the screen
  • There are a lot of allergy and warning notices that have to be posted now
  • There are so many more items that they don't even seem to post it all out here
  • The provincial law that makes chains post their calories has forced them to really shrink the info to fit it all in

So if you don't know what you want before hand, good luck reading this thing. But one thing caught my eye in the top left corner:

Spicy Buffalo Sauce eh? This has been around the US for a long time, and it might have been around Canada before too, but not for a while I think. I wasn't even in the mood for Spicy Buffalo; I really wanted BBQ or Sweet & Sour or even the Hot Mustard. But I have an addiction ...

I checked the McApp and boom - there was an offer for 10 McNuggets for the price of 6! Sweet. Time to try this dip out.

10 McNuggets warrants 2 dips per order. But here I'm counting the nuggets in that photo and I only see 9, but then again, I might have eaten one right away.

I am biased, McNuggets are my favourite of all the chicken nuggets on the fast food market. It's the batter on it that is different from all the others - it's crispy but smooth unlike traditional nugget breading. I'm particular to the boot (as opposed to the bell, bone, and ball).

So the Spicy Buffalo Sauce is orange in colour and when you open the lid, that buttery-cayenne hot sauce smell is very noticeable. I couldn't find any information on this sauce on the Canadian website, but the American one lists its ingredients as:

"Cayenne Pepper Sauce (Cayenne Red Peppers, Distilled Vinegar, Water, Salt, Garlic Powder), Water, Soybean Oil, Modified Food Starch, Xanthan Gum, Beet Juice (Color), Salt, Natural Flavor, Garlic Powder, Calcium Disodium EDTA (Protect Flavor)"
Now often the Canadian ingredient list is different, but the above seems very plausible. At least cayenne peppers are at the top of the list (of the hot sauce anyway). Not much other heat there, but I was surprised by the beet juice.

The sauce is just the right amount of runny to thick ratio. Most actual wing sauce is a bit runnier, but in this case you are dipping the naked nugget and you want it to cling on.

You are going to want to double dip - everyone knows you can only really get part of the nugget covered, and a nugget in proper etiquette, you don't want to eat a whole one in one go. So go ahead, double dip.

The flavour is pretty decent. You have that strong, fake-butter and cayenne flavour going on. It tastes like Buffalo sauce - buttery, sour, spicy. Artificial Buffalo sauce, but Buffalo none the less. It has just a hint of heat, but I think even the average non-chili head is going to find this pretty mild. Kudos again though for using actually cayenne hot sauce.

Would I get it again? Yes. On this trip I didn't even feel like getting Spicy Buffalo Sauce, but I was glad I tried it. The next time I'm in the mood I'd get it again. Its sort of artificial tasting, but it's a good dip for McNuggets. I'm glad it's an option and I hope it sticks around. And with the McApp offers, it was a good time to experiment.

Dunn's Dill Pickle Chips - Chip Review

Earlier this summer LJ and I were stocking up on some snacks at Costco for a gathering with kids and adults. We were in the chip aisle when a bag stood out because I had never seen it before, and it was black (unlike most bags of chips). It was Dunn's Dill Pickle chips, and I was a bit excited.

See I love dill pickles, and dill pickle potato chips. I also like Dunn's Famous Deli. I was going to link this to my review of Dunn's, and to my surprise, I have never reviewed Dunn's. If you are unfamiliar, Dunn's is a Montreal based deli that has expanded greatly in Ottawa, but also across the country.

photo from https://www.mtlblog.com/best-of-mtl/best-montreal-pickles
It was founded by Myer Dunn in 1927 and eventually specializing in Montreal smoked meat.  I love a good Montreal smoked meat sandwich, which should come with crispy fries, a Cott's Black Cherry soda, and of course, kosher dill pickles. Now I know the next time I go I need to do a review.

So this was a product I was not expecting. The only commercially sold item I had seen sold from Dunn's was their pre-packaged smoked meat. Being at Costco, the bag was huge; 750g! To get an idea, an average bag of say Ruffles Creamy Dill chips are 245g. That's 3+ bags of a regular chips, and at $5.99, it's not a bad deal.

We picked up a bag, and the Costco reciept checker at the door asked me how they were because he was curious. "I don't know yet, I'll let you know" I said, never seeing the man again. Also funny, we didn't use it for our event. We were going to take it home with us, but my wife's dad said he would try them. LJ tried to tell him he wouldn't like them, but he said he would. So we didn't get to try them right away, then we bought another bag. Then her dad did try them and said he did not like them and he thought they were a different kind of chip altogether. We collected that bag the last time we visited as well. Also, at the time of this post, they are no longer sold in Ottawa, and only available in the GTA it seems.

The bag is huge, but like all chip bags, is half filled with air. That makes the above photo very deceptive in how much is in the bag. You cannot deny the dill pickle smell when you open that bag. Some people like that sour pickle smell, others hate it. I love it, personally.

The chips are simulated in flavour - a quick scan on the ingredients doesn't even list pickle, dill, or anything else similar, most closely 'spices'.

The chips are ruffled in nature - making them pick up lots of flavour seasoning. They are also very crunchy and you would think sturdy, but in both bags I found that a large portion of the bag is broken. Dunn's isn't usually in the chip game, but I find the quality of their chip in between brand name chips that are higher in quality and no-name store brand chips that I find kinda crap.

The flavour is there - these are sour, salty, and dilly. They will make you pucker your lips, for sure. As sour and salty as say Salt & Vinegar chips, but with a creamy, dilly note in there. They aren't drenched in seasoning, but you are going to need to lick your fingers when you are done. LJ liked them well enough, but she's not a big dill pickle chip person. I also found these went really well with dip (especially Frank's Hot Wing chip dip, review to come).

Would I get these again? Yes, but these bags take a LONG time to go through when it's only two people. I think it's too bad that the bags are so big, and as well that they are only available at Costco. The chips have the crunch and they have the flavour you want in a dill chip. I wouldn't say they were my favourite, but they were good in my opinion.

MONTANA's BBQ & BAR - Ottawa ON

I like to give places second chances. Sometimes thirds, sometimes fourths. Montana's is one of those chains that every couple of years we go, say we probably won't go back, and then we do. Two things specifically motivated a trip back to this Ontario based chain; 1) right now (September 2018) they have a "Chicken Showdown" special with various chicken dishes, one of which is Smoked, then fried wings 2) I found out the Merivale location has a Monday wing night. It was also a holiday Monday and we decided to go out for wings.

Montana's has recently gone through a minor rebranding - still the same kind of food, but with a name change from Montana's Cookhouse to Montana's BBQ & Bar (so different!) and some slight alterations to the aesthetic of the restaurant (see that fake smoke stack they added to the front), but I was wondering if any of this was going to effect the experience.

See, I've generally had not great experiences at Montana's - when I reviewed another location back in 2009, I was not impressed with the food. "I've heard from some family and friends and read quite a few negative reviews that all followed the same theme: slow service, cold restaurant, cold food." Back then I wanted to see if it was the case for me, and while we had a good server, our food was cold and not that great. Would it be the case once again?

We arrived around 5pm on the holiday Monday and the place was packed. People were waiting outside, and were were told for two it would be about a 10-15 minute wait. The place didn't look that different other than the literal branding; the walls still had a cabin theme with deer heads, snowshoes, even an old car. At the front they had this neat fake fire that glowed and produced 'smoke' which was just steam. We looked around and there were several empty tables and booths, so we were a little confused about the wait, but after about 10 minutes we had a booth. Our server was Kelsey and she did a great job of taking care of us, being friendly and getting refills on drinks. She also confirmed that was indeed wing night with wings being half price.

The menu is full of steaks, fajitas, burgers and the such. LJ had a hard time between wanting wings like me, or getting ribs, which is what Montana's is probably best known for. She went with wings, but I think she should have gone the rib route. I was really keen on trying the new Chicken Challenge menu, but also wanted to try the wings from the original menu too. They also have jumped on the 'Cauliflower' Wing bandwagon, which is great for vegetarians wanting to get in on wings too.

We ordered a bunch of wings, but we also tried the new "Ugly Delicious Flatbread" as well as ordering several cornbread muffins. We told Kelsey we didn't care what order food came out - just whatever was ready when it was ready. She mentioned that she had just seen the cornbread muffins come out of the oven and she went to grab them right away.

We got 2 each at $0.79 a piece. They were warm and smelled good. They aren't big, but they are not the smallest cornbread muffins I've been served before either. They are great with some melted butter, and I've actually ordered take-out of just these muffins before.

The Ugly Delicious Flatbread was ... well ugly ... and not delicious. It wasn't big; about the size of a large pita. The bread was both burnt so that the bottom was too crispy, but was also so tough that when they 'cut' it, it didn't cut, and we tried to use our butter knife and it still wouldn't cut. We had to rip it and it wasn't pretty. It was also not hot. The flavours were all over the place on this thing too - I mean looking back at the toppings, we should have known better. "Topped with a creamy honey dill sauce, crispy chicken, shredded pickles, melted marble cheddar, and finished with a drizzle of Nashville hot sauce". It was just a weird recipe - LJ did not like it and said it wasn't the restaurant's fault but corporate for the recipe. I said maybe so but the restaurant made it cold and the bread tough/burnt. I did like the Nashville hot sauce though. We didn't finish it and took it home. I tried to eat it for lunch today but just picked off the chicken.

So the flatbread was a big pass, the cornbread was good, but would the wings be better than last time?

Wings come in orders of 8 or 16, which is fine except at regular price 8 wings for $13.79 is terrible. Especially considering the size and it's literally only 8 pieces, not even a whole wing. Fortunately we were there on wing night (which is all day long - awesome!) at half price. The wings come with a few skinny pieces of carrot, and a choice of dip (ranch, blue cheese) and we went with the blue cheese. It was a decent blue cheese dip, and the carrots were fresh. We also were given a metal pail for our bones (awesome), lots of extra napkins, and large wetnaps for cleaning up.

The size of the wings were about what I would say is a small+ to a medium. They were a decent size but they were not big. The regular wings are double breaded, so they have a thicker coating that makes them a bit bigger. They are crunchy to bite into, but the meat is tough and they are plain with no seasoning. The breading is also flour heavy and takes away from the flavour of the chicken. LJ was not impressed and I did defend them a bit explaining we ordered them sauceless but that they normally aren't meant to be eaten dry. I would not recommend eating them dry - but we wanted to try a bunch of the sauces.

The Smoked then Fried wings were much better. They had a delicately crispy skin, were moist inside, and tore apart much easier.

So we got a double order of the regular double breaded wings, no sauce, and an order of the Chicken Showdown smoked and fried, which come with a Carolina Gold BBQ sauce. For the regular wings we got Buffalo-Hot and Suicide on the side, but at our table there are bottles of other Hot & BBQ sauces.

HICKORY SMOKED, FRIED & DRY RUBBED

These are on only for a limited time, and that is a shame, because these were delicious. I mentioned before the great texture with the tender meat and crispy skin. But the flavour was great too - you could really taste the hickory smoke in the chicken, but then there was a great salty, spicy rub on the skin. My only complaint I had was I wish these wings were bigger.

CAROLINA GOLD BBQ

This sauce comes on the side of the smoked wings automatically. They don't need it, but I understand why Montana's might feel people will want a sauce. While I think an Alabama white BBQ sauce would be better, this essentially honey mustard dip was good. Sweet, mustard-sour, it did work with the dry rubbed chicken.

BUFFALO-HOT

When our waitress listed off the wing flavours (that aren't on the menu for some reason), we were slightly confused and thought they had Buffalo, AND Mild, Medium and Hot. But they have Buffalo that is graded into the heats. We went with Hot and it was a good Buffalo sauce. Not that spicy, but it was buttery and had a good flavour. I'd get it again.

SMOKIN' HABANERO HOT SAUCE

This was in a bottle on our table already. I really liked this sauce - it's got a good bite, it's full of chili's, it's slightly sweet and vinegary. It worked well with the double breaded wings. I wish I could have taken this home.

CHIPOTLE HONEY BBQ SAUCE

This was another sauce on the table, and another I wish I could have taken home. A great sweet BBQ sauce that had a bit of a kick from the chipotle, which also gave a smokey hint to it.

TEXAS BOLD BBQ SAUCE

This was a more classic BBQ sauce - dark in flavour. More savoury than sweet. You've had this dark type of BBQ sauce before. It was good, but overshadowed by the more interesting flavoured sauces at the table.

APPLE BUTTER BBQ SAUCE

This was also good sauce - sweet and savoury at the same time. Mostly sweet, but it too paired well with the chicken, but I can see this being really good with the pork ribs.

SUICIDE

I also got a side of suicide. It didn't look very appetizing when it came out, but I think it's because it's the Buffalo-Hot sauce mixed with the Smok'n Habanero Hot Sauce and the kitchen just didn't mix it fast enough. I liked those two sauces individually, and they were good mixed together. It wasn't suicide heat level, but the flavour was good.

FINAL SCORE:

LJ and I differed a bit on our feelings about the food. We both agreed that the cornbread was great, and that the flatbread was awful. For the wings, we both have different approaches. I may be a bit of a wing apologist though. The regular double breaded wings were very crunchy, but they were dry and tough and are not tasty on their own without sauce. The Chicken Showdown Hickory Smoked then Fried wings are awesome in both flavour and texture and are a shame they are only a limited time offer.  I would definitely go back to Montana's for those wings, and probably for the other wings but only on wing night. 10/15
